While it may seem like falling asleep when you’re exhausted would be easy, many parents find it difficult to drift off when their schedule is dictated by a very demanding (and unpredictable) little person. And, that age old advice of "sleep when the baby sleeps" only works when your body and mind will cooperate (and the baby's still actually sleeping!).

I’ll always remember repeating this advice to myself with frustration as I’d be cleaning out the breast pump while the clock was ticking before my newborn would wake up again. Or wishing I could nap with such longing when my second daughter was born and my three-year-old just wouldn’t cooperate. And now, even two kids in with my youngest 17 months old, I still struggle with intense insomnia when my toddler hits a rough patch and is up at night teething or my hormones are out of whack.
